On June 10, 2013 at the Rotary luncheon Dr. Matt Logan gave an excellent visual and oral presentation on Youth Crime. Dr. Logan is an FBI trained hostage negotiator and retired member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He is a conference speaker and facilitator specializing in Conflict and Crisis Management, Psychopathy, Risk for Violence, Sexual Predators, and Trauma. Dr. Logan does risk assessments and works for the courts in assessing sexually violent predator (SVP) cases worldwide.

Youth crime is up 300% from 2004 to 2007. The latest statistics for 2011 show a decrease in youth crime by 10%. Things have gone from a fist fight – to a knife fight – to a gun fight. Less than half the youth accused are formally charged by the police. 57% are diverted from the justice system.

Why the violence—expression, release of anger/frustration, manipulation, retaliation against many individuals, revenge coming out. Violence is a learned behaviour. With early intervention, before 12 years of age, it can be altered. Factors contributing to violent behaviour – need for attention, respect, peer pressure. Violent behaviour is a result of bullying, sexual assault, childhood abuse, violence at home or in the Community. Causes – childhood rejection and Social isolation.

The video display used by Dr. Logan contained interesting facts and figures from massive studies Worldwide.

This unforgettable laugh-filled experience is by the author of The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and The Goodbye Girl. “The play holds up beautifully. There is timelessness to this play that makes it surprisingly relevant to today’s audiences.” – Pegasus News.

Outcome being reduced hours in the ER with critical cases on weekends being ambulanced to Smiths Falls. This was to take pressure of ER nurses who are also OR nurses.

18 positions were found to be excess. All employees effected found other openings within the hospital system. Only one actually let go who shortly thereafter found suitable employment.

Several beds were closed but can be re-opened as necessary.

Deficit will be reduced over a number of years.

GWM only hospital in this LINS area to get financial assistance in 2013 because of the prompt attention to the financial management of the institution.

Bisonnette emphatic that hospital will not be closing.

The Rotary Club of Perth was asked to talk about Rotary and the End Polio Now campaign to the Grade 7/8 classes at St. Johns High School. The students heard sessions on social justice and helping others from groups such as Rotary, YAK, Catholic Womens’ League, Grannies for Africa, Guatemala Stove Project, The Table and student action groups within the school. Each student could attend 4 of the 9 sessions.

David Batchelor, the Rotary Club of Perth’s incoming president, made four 30 minute presentations about polio and the work that Rotary is doing to help the final stages of eradicating Polio. He specifically highlighted the recent Canadian campaign that raised $6.7M including matching grants from the Canadian Government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as the Canadian Government’s recent announcement to contribute a further $250M over the next 5 years as part of the estimated $5B+ needed to completely eradicate the disease. David also had opportunities to highlight Rotary’s youth programs to the students. Well done David!

Nicki has been the Executive Director since Open Doors was founded in 1996. She explained that prior to the establishment of Open Doors family and children requiring mental health services had to go to either Kingston or Ottawa. She said that the profile of who is seeking services from Open Doors has changed over to the years and they now see an equal number of boys and girls. The most common health concerns related to stress and anxiety. One of the major initiatives that Open Doors has undertaken is to have a counselor in every high school in the county once weekly which makes it easier for youth to access service. In responding to a question about how do parents or other adults know if a child might need help Nicki said that significant lasting changes in behaviour and personality are usually the best indicators that a child is experiencing something for which they might counseling.
