Guest Speaker – Canadian Guide Dogs

canadian guide dogs for the blindToday’s speaker was from Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. Shauna Kemp is the Puppy Walking Coordinator.

There are approximately 500 volunteers, 60 of whom are foster families for puppies. The puppies need early socialization in order to properly do their job. After living with a foster family for about 12-18 months, the puppies are enrolled in school. In the event that a dog isn’t well suited to be a Guide/Assistant dog, the foster family gets the first choice to adopt the dog into their family.

Most often, the dogs are Labs and Golden Retrievers. Occasionally, Standard Poodles are used (they are hypo-allergenic), and less frequently, German Shepherds.
