Guest Speaker – Friends of Murphy’s Point

Friends of Murphys PointToday’s guest speaker was Beth Peterkin from the Friends of Murphy’s Point. The purpose of the organization is to support the Park’s goals and protect it. There are many fundraising initiatives throughout the year including the Canoe Raffle, Polar Bear Plunge, and Dog Scarves which are sold at the Park Store.

Friends of Murphy’s Point also coordinates many Educational Activities involving students and children. Rotary has provided funding for the Archaeo Apprentice Program for Grade 5 Students.

Friends of Murphy’s Point also monitor the Black Ratsnake, a threatened species. The snakes are chip-implanted and followed, and much education is provided about them.

Another popular program is the Super Kids In Parks winter program. You can read about it here.

Upcoming is the “Build a Bridge Bash” to raise funds to help rebuild the bridge across Black Creek on the McParlan House Trail. Contact Friends of Murphy’s Point for more information.
